BC's free throws finally close out Pascack Hills
Kyle Kahler pulled down 9 rebounds as Bergen Catholic held off Pascack Hills and earned its 17th trip to the Bergen County Jamboree final. |
HACKENSACK -- If the Bergen County Jamboree ever put out a Cookbook for Winning Basketball Games, the recipe under Bergen Catholic would read something like this: Take one part tenacity, one part resiliency and one part grit, mix in a pinch of offense, a splash of defensive pressure and a dash of fourth quarter free throw efficiency and simmer for 32 minutes. That has been the basic tenet of the Crusader team this year, one that has taken them to a 19-5 record and, on Sunday, earned them a trip to their Jamboree-record 17th championship game appearance. Westwood becomes first 16 seed to reach Final 4

MAHWAH
-- Corey Raji has carried his Westwood team on his back many a time. He was
doing it again on Sunday afternoon at Ramapo College in the Jamboree quarterfinals
against Ramapo, but he wasn’t going to be able to do it by himself in
this game. Enter Mike Deans, Kyle Hourigan and Dylan Cacciola, three teammates
who all made significant contributions late in the game before Raji made sure
that he would finally step on the court at the Rothman Center to play in the
Final 4. Cacciola banged home his only points of the game on a three-point
field goal with 2:27 left that gave the Cardinals a 50-49 lead, and Raji hit
two free throws with 17.5 seconds left to solidify a 52-49 victory that puts
Westwood into the Final 4 for the first time in school history.

Westwood takes out top-seeded St. Joseph
Corey Raji put up 33 points as Westwood became the the fifth No. 16 seed in Jambo history to knock off the No. 1 in the Round of 16. The Cardinals beat SJR, 68-58. |
TENAFLY
-- Everybody knew the deal coming into Sunday afternoon’s Round of 16
finale between St. Joseph, the undefeated top seed, and 16th-seed Westwood.
The best player was on the underdog, but could he get enough help? The
fact that Corey Raji scored 33 points means that his teammates were able to
get him the ball. The fact that his teammates also scored 35 points means
that Westwood joins the likes of St. Cecilia (1978), Ridgefield (1979), Cliffside
Park (1984) and North Arlington (1985) in Jamboree annals.

Curran goes off as Ramapo runs around Englewood
ALLENDALE
-- Pete Carrill would be proud of the game plan that Ramapo displayed in the
Round of 16 opener to Saturday’s Jamboree quadruple header at Northern
Highlands. The long time Princeton basketball coach saw his patented offense
run to near perfection. The
Raiders played the patient style of offense and Englewood allowed them to
control the tempo, and the end result was a 64-54 win that sends Ramapo to
its eighth straight win and a date in the quarterfinals next Sunday at Ramapo
College against the St. Joseph-Westwood winner.

NORTH JERSEY -- Because so many people showed up at the Jambo on Day 1, we have decided to suspend our coverage because everybody who cares seems to have been in attendance at Paramus Catholic on Sunday afternoon. It was a turnaway crowd for the three games at PC and some fans waited for nearly an hour to get in the gym. OK, after further reflection, all five first round games that were played on Sunday are written and pictured up, NJS.com style. Read all about it below.

WALDWICK -- Over the first half of the season, St. Joseph has been the best team in Bergen County in everyone’s eyes. The Green Knights will have the opportunity to prove it on the court beginning next weekend as they look to defend their title as the top seed in the 51st Oscar F. Thompson Memorial Bergen County Jamboree. READ THE STORY...
