Alexander DiSanzo played more minutes than he had in any game all season, and gave Bosco an advantage in the paint.

MAHWAH -- Styles make fights, and style was definitely the difference in the opening quarterfinal game of the Jamboree on Sunday at Ramapo College. Don Bosco went with the more physical line-up, and it was its ticket to the semifinals.

Alexander DiSanzo played more minutes than he had in any game all season, Vinnie Pernice did the grunt work on the off side and Georgio Milligan provided some strong first half rebounding to ignite a 54-40 win over Ridgefield Park.

The Ironmen (17-5), winners of six in a row, will now take on Westwood in the 6:00 p.m. opener next Sunday at the Rothman Center.
Don Bosco was able to exploit the Scarlets on a couple of levels. First, they picked up a number of easy transition baskets off rebounds, as RP was crashing the boards with four players.

Ridgefield Park's John Tello had to work for all 13 of his points.

Secondly, they went to the more physical player in DiSanzo inside and it created opportunities for back side rebounds as well as back side baskets on the offensive end.

“He was a big key for us, he helped a lot defensively,” DB head coach Kevin Diverio said of DiSanzo. “The team executed well defensively, and I think that’s what won the game for us. It keyed our transition offense.”

Specifically, they were able to neutralize John Tello, who had eight points in the first half before going scoreless for 12 minutes in the second half. He finished with 13 points, but had only 3 rebounds.

“We did a good job of taking Tello out of the game, especially in the second half,” Diverio said. “We made it very difficult for him to get touches.”

Ridgefield Park (14-5) held a 15-13 lead after the first quarter, thanks to a trio of three-point field goals, but the Ironmen scored the first eight points of the third quarter, with Kyle Smyth getting the first four on layups in transition. Vinnie Pernice hit a short back side jumper and DiSanzo converted an offensive rebound to make it 21-15.

Kyle Smyth scored on consecutive fastbreak baskets during Bosco's 8-0 run to start the second quarter.

“We were stressing the off side all week,” Diverio noted. “A lot of times it’s our guards (doing the rebounding), but Vinnie worked the glass well today. Georgio (Milligan) also had a great rebounding game in the first half.”

Milligan had seven of his nine rebounds in the first half, and while he had only two points, he got help from Pernice and Peter Bonilla, who scored six apiece in the opening half.

“We’re at our best when we’re sharing the ball,” Diverio commented. “When we don’t care who scores or who is getting the stats, we’re pretty good.”

Armed with a 27-21 lead entering the third quarter, the Ironmen slowed it down in the halfcourt and were able to extend the margin to 36-27 after three periods. Ridgefield Park took only four shots in that third period, playing into Bosco’s tempo.

“We were stressing patience offensively,” Diverio related. “We didn’t think they had the athletes that wanted to come out and play us on the perimeter, so if we were patient, eventually we would get the open shot or the layup.”

Ridgefield Park got 13 points from senior Patrick Pannetta.

They executed it very well in the fourth quarter, as they again started quickly with the first seven points in the final period. DiSanzo started off with a layup and Smyth added a three-point play and a basket off a steal to effectively end the contest.

Ridgefield Park also got 13 points from Patrick Pannetta, but they hit only 14 of 38 from the floor (5 of 14 on three-point field goals). They canned all seven of their free throws.

Don Bosco hit on 22 of 37 field goals (0 for 4 from three) and 10 of 14 at the line. Smyth had 17 points, Bonilla 11 and Pernice and Milligan 10 each. Pernice added 7 rebounds and DiSanzo 6.
