Milligan comes in handy as Bosco takes title

By Jim McConville
NJS.com Staff Writer

HACKENSACK -- There had been plenty of talk about the sixth man for St. Joseph after Saturday night’s Bergen County Jamboree semifinals. The sixth man made a major impact again in the championship game on Monday. The difference was that it was not the Green Knights’ James Bryant but Don Bosco’s Giorgio Milligan who stepped up and became a prominent figure in the 50th title game. READ THE STORY...

James Bryant provided the spark off the bench that St. Joseph used to put away Old Tappan in the second quarter of Saturday Jambo semifinal.

HACKENSACK -- James Bryant could easily be a starter on any high school boys basketball team in Bergen County. Bryant could easily be a starter for his own St. Joseph team, but he’s not. It may not make sense, but there is a method to the madness. Bryant has become the super sixth man for the Green Knights, the guy who can ignite the team in many different ways. On Saturday night in the Bergen County Jamboree semifinals, he kick started the offense. Scoring 11 of his 14 points in the final 3:56 of the first period, the senior turned a 5-3 deficit into a 15-11 lead before the Knights blew the game open at the start of the second half on the way to a 66-28 rout of Old Tappan at the Rothman Center on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University. Sophomore Kyle Smyth led Bosco with 13 points, including two clutch fourth quarter free throws.

PARAMUS -- Connor Cornine has been something of the forgotten man for the Don Bosco basketball team. The 6-foot-7 senior has toiled in relative anonymity for the Ironmen, content to get his minutes and contribute. On Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the Bergen County Jamboree at Paramus High School, he stepped to the forefront after center Pete Brown was saddled with early foul trouble and made all the right moves. With 12 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, Cornine became the cornerstone for Bosco’s 51-47 defeat of Bergen Catholic. READ THE STORY... | PHOTOS!

Upset special:Old Tappan KO's Paramus Catholic

Doug Parker knocked down 7 of 12 three-point shots on the way to a 27-point outburst that led No. 6 Old Tappan to a shocking upset of No. 3 Paramus Catholic in the Bergen County Jamboree.

PARAMUS -- You won’t get much of a debate if you were to say that Paramus Catholic has a more talented boys basketball team than Old Tappan. You would be just as hard pressed to find someone outside of Old Tappan that believed that the Golden Knights had a chance to win their Jamboree quarterfinal matchup with the Paladins. Dennis Rossi knew that in order for his team to win, it needed to do two things -- shoot over 50 percent and keep their turnover total under 12. Even then, the Knights still needed the ball to bounce their way. READ THE STORY... | PHOTOS!

Xavier McAden scored a career-high 28 points as the Bridgemen fought back from a double digit deficit to knock off Leonia in the Round of 16 at the Bergen County Jamboree.

TENAFLY -- For the first time in quite a while, a small-school, all public school matchup took center stage in the Bergen County Jamboree. While Fort Lee and Leonia did battle, there was the game within the game, the shootout between two of the top scorers in the county. Ahmed Hassan and Pedro Burgos did enough to warrant the pre-game hype, and where Hassan owned the edge in the battle, Fort Lee had the X-factor that won the war. MORE... | PHOTOS!

ALLENDALE -- For the past two weeks, the Bergen Catholic basketball team has been playing at a high level. The Crusaders continued that trend in the Round of 16 at the Oscar F. Thompson Memorial Bergen County Jamboree. The combination of strength on the boards and balanced scoring was too much for Pascack Hills, as the eighth-seeded Crusaders moved on with a convincing 57-36 win over the ninth-seeded Cowboys at Northern Highlands High school on Saturday afternoon. Ryan Cuccinelli topped St. Mary’s with 16 points and 7 rebounds as the Gaels pulled away from Bogota, 56-39, in the opening round of the Bergen County Jamboree.

EAST RUTHERFORD -- For three quarters, Bogota hung tough with St. Mary’s in Sunday’s first round Jamboree game at Becton High School. Using just the five starters for the entire 24 minutes, the Bucs continued to find ways to stay in the game. In the fourth quarter, however, it all fell apart as the Gaels seized their opportunity and wore out Bogota with a 15-0 run in the first 6:06 on the way to a 56-39 win that sends them to the Round of 16 against Westwood next Sunday at 1:45 p.m. at Tenafly High School.
