The Oscar F. Thompson Memorial Bergen County Jamboree plays its 50th tournament beginning on Sunday, and as much as things seem to stay the same, there is a big change in the balance of the field.

The NNJIL still maintains its dominance of the top seeds, but the league considered Bergen County’s best no longer dominates the 21-team field. In fact, a quick search of the selected teams shows some glaring absences.

Teaneck? Not there. Hackensack? Not there. Ridgewood? Not there. Englewood? Not there. You have to go all the way back to 1955 to find a tournament where all four of those teams were not in the tournament in the same year.

Don Bosco (10-4), defending champion St. Joseph (12-1) and Paramus Catholic (10-3) will be holding up the NNJIL banner as the first, second and third seeds, respectively. Don Bosco’s overall strength of schedule, undefeated Bergen County record and their win over Passaic (the only team to beat St. Joseph) gave them the narrow edge for the number one seed.

The only other NNJIL team will be Bergen Catholic (7-5), which received the 8th seed. The Crusaders are one of two teams selected with winning percentages below the .650 that guarantees a berth, with Northern Highlands (7-5) being the other.

Fort Lee heads up the small schools, with the Group 2 Bridgemen taking down the fourth seed. League rival Westwood is the fifth seed, setting up a possible quarterfinal rematch of Fort Lee’s regular season win.

The top ten is rounded out by Old Tappan (11-2), Ramapo (10-3), BC, Pascack Hills (10-2) and Ridgefield Park (11-2).

With five first round games, there will be two sites on Sunday, with three games at Becton High School and two at Paramus Catholic High School. A total of 26 teams submitted applications to the committee, with Teaneck, Hackensack, Ridgewood, Englewood and Pascack Valley not receiving invitations.
