TENAFLY -- When the seeds for the 50th Oscar F. Thompson Memorial Bergen County Jamboree came out, there was a bit of surprise that Don Bosco had received the top spot instead of defending champion St. Joseph.
The Ironmen opened their tournament play against 17th-seeded Fair Lawn in a very methodical fashion, stretching out with their guards and extending out with the big men inside on the way to a 67-34 victory.
The road will get a bit more difficult next week, when Bosco meets old rival Bergen Catholic in the quarterfinals on Sunday at Paramus High School. The game will be the feature contest at 7:00 p.m. and pits two teams that needed overtime two weeks ago before the Dons came out with a win.
“Any time our schools get together in any sport, it’s going to be a battle,” DB head coach Kevin Diverio understated.
Trevor Harris proved to be the biggest thorn in the Cutters’ side, scoring 9 of his 13 points in the first quarter before dishing off five assists and adding four steals the rest of the way. Combined with pair of three-point field goals by guard Peter Bonilla, it gave the Ironmen a 20-8 lead after one period. The guard scoring also forced Fair Lawn (9-7) to have to come out of their zone defense.
“It was good for us to play
against a zone,” Diverio said. “We responded pretty good against
it. A sluggish start, but once we got going, the kids figured out what to
do and played well.”
Pete Brown and Connor Cornine took over the middle two periods, with Brown
leading the way in the second with three of his four blocked shots and four
of his eight points as Bosco expanded its lead to 40-18 at the half.
Cornine dropped in 8 of his 12 points in the third quarter as the Ironmen kept the lead over 20 before turning the game over to the reserves in the final period.
“Obviously, we had a huge size advantage inside,” Diverio noted. “Jumping out to the big lead at halftime, they had to come out and play us man, which we knew would work in our favor.”
Fair Lawn was frustrated at both ends for the entire game, shooting only 12 of 50 from the field and 10 of 20 (missing all five three-point tries) at the free throw line. Vinnie Graff had 11 points and Matt Paterno had 10 points and 8 rebounds for the Cutters.
Don Bosco (13-4) hit 28 of its 60 shots, including 6 of 14 three-pointers, and hit 5 of 9 foul shots. Nine Ironmen scored points, and Vin Pernice had a team-high 8 rebounds. Brown added 6 boards and Kyle Smyth dished out four assists.
