Izayah Reyes had two of Union City's six TD runs as the Soaring Eagles got back to .500 for the season with a 56-7 win at Memorial on Thursday night.

WEST NEW YORK -- Union City’s dominant running game drove the Soaring Eagles to an easy win 56-7 win over Memorial (1-5) on Thursday night in West New York. As a team, Union City rushed 34 times for 384 yards and six touchdowns and improved its record to 3-3 on the season.

It was a perfect night for football, clear and cool, at Coviello Field overlooking Midtown Manhattan. The Soaring Eagles took advantage of two first quarter Memorial fumbles and converted them into two touchdowns and then went on to score three more times in the first half to ice the game, 35-0, by the intermission.

The Soaring Eagles’ offense was well balanced. Running back Jean Alvarez led the Soaring Eagles as he ripped off all three of his touchdown runs in the first half, his third being the longest at 27 yards. That came just before halftime and put UC in front 35-0. Alvarez finished with 9 carries for 139 yards and sharing the load with Izayah Reyes, who finished with 14 carries for 121 yards and two TDs, including a 7-yard TD in the dominant first half. Devin Gonzalez got in on the act with 8 carries for 100 yards and wide receiver Joel Jimenez had an 8-yard rushing touchdown late in the first half as well.

Union City’s defense dominated, too, as defensive end and West Point commit Jose Taveras led the Eagles with 9 tackles and safety Mohamet Thiam added 7 stops in the win.

Union City will try to get back over .500 next Friday night at home against in the Eagles Nest against Bayonne (3-2), while Memorial will visit Passaic (3-3), also on October 20.
