McCourtys score St. Joseph its first title since 1982
Devin McCourty scored a season-high 19 points to pace St. Joseph to a 56-36 win over Paramus Catholic in the Jambo final on Thursday night. |
HACKENSACK
-- Senior leadership can never be discounted, especially when it comes from
players who are proven winners. The lineup for the St. Joseph basketball team
includes three starters who won three football championships each along with
a player many consider Bergen County's best basketball player. These four
seniors are the impetus of the Green Knights' success. Throughout
the season, the offense for the Green Knights has run through Gerald Inman.

PC pulls the upset, SJR pulls away in Jambo semifinals
Tyrell McKenzie helped lead Paramus Catholic into the Jambo semis for the first time since 1976. |
HACKENSACK -- There will be no repeat champion at the Bergen County Jamboree this season. Third-seeded Paramus Catholic ended Don Bosco Prep's reign in one of Friday night's semifinals at the Rothman Center on the campus of Fairleigh Dickinson University. The question that popped up after watching Game 2 was: Can anyone beat St. Joseph? We'll have to wait until next Thursday when the NNJIL's Division C will be well represented.

PARAMUS -- Because the photographer who was scheduled to shoot all four games of the Bergen County Jamboree quarterfinals decided to go AWOL without so much as a phone call or email, we have no photos of Sunday's action. But what we do have is Jim McConville, who paints the word picture as well as anyone in the business and he brings you all of the games in fine detail.

Ramapo's 17-point win over rival Demarest was the closest thing to a nail-biter at Tenafly High School on Sunday. All of the higher seeds won with Englewood, Bergen Catholic and St. Joseph all cruising to comfortable wins to join Ramapo in next weekend's quarterfinals. The top four seeds have all advanced to the Round of 8 which will take place next Saturday at Paramus High School. Cliffside and Westwood pull Round of 16 upsets
Tyrell Biggs led defending champion Don Bosco Prep past Pal Park and headlong into a rematch with Westwood, which almost pulled the upset in last season quarterfinal round. |
ALLENDALE -- The BCSL-American Division flexed its muscle on Saturday as the first half of the quarterfinal bracket took shape at Northern Highlands High School. Cliffside Park and Westwood, the Nos. 12 and 10 seeds respectively, knocked off two NNJIL teams, Ridgewood and Teaneck, to reach the final 8. Both were there last season and this time around they will be joined by defending champion Don Bosco Prep and Paramus Catholic, the two parochial powers that made short work of their public school opponents. NORTH JERSEY -- For some schools it is a privilege to be there, for others it is the start of a run to the Rothman Center. The Round of 16 in the Bergen County Jamboree starts up on Saturday and some of the matchups are intriguing. Undefeated and top seeded St. Joseph Regional against No. 16 Leonia? Forget David vs. Goliath, how about Verne Troyer against Yao Ming? READ THE STORY...
Day 1 at the Jambo: A little bit of everything
Jermaine Cushnie and Fair Lawn dominated the boards in their opening round win over Wood-Ridge. |
RUTHERFORD
-- The first day of the 49th Annual Oscar F. Thompson Memorial Jamboree had
a little bit of everything. From one of the highest scoring games in tournament
history (Fair Lawn vs. Wood-Ridge) to one where you would have had enough
time to keep score with hammer and chisel (Lyndhurst vs. Saddle Brook). There
was an overtime game, two lower seeds advancing and a good day for any school
that NJS.com Editorial Director Cory Doviak ever attended (Pal Park and Leonia).
