SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Normally in a state final volleyball match, when a team comes back from a 24-20 deficit to win an opening game, that would be the focal point of the story. But when you are writing about two teams like Northern Valley/Demarest and Northern Valley/Old Tappan, two storied programs that are sister schools and have the best public school rivalry in all of New Jersey, you knew it was going to be all about Set 3. What happened last year, last month and last week between these two teams means nada and it was easy to predict that Saturday's Group 3 state final was going to go the distance, despite Old Tappan's amazing comeback in the opening game. It was a tip by Veronica Corcoran early in the third and deciding set that looked innocent enough when it hit the floor to give Demarest a 4-3 lead, but the Norsewomen never gave it back. They messaged a slight advantage through the midway point, held off one Old Tappan surge near the end and then scored four of the final five points of the match to claim the Group 3 state championship. With a 24-26, 25-16, 25-20 victory at South Brunswick High School, Demarest solidified this season's series against Old Tappan with a third victory in four matches (by a combined tally of 7 sets to 6) and earned the No. 2 seed in next weekend's Tournament of Champions.
