Don Bosco Prep's Carl Augustin scored 7 points in a 17-3 run to help the Ironmen take control of their Round of 16 win over Queen of Peace. |
ALLENDALE - With just over a minute remaining in Queen of Peace's second round Jamboree game with Don Bosco, head coach Dennis Gregory signaled for a timeout, wryly looking over at Bosco head coach with a big smile.
No, he wasn't enjoying the fruits of a major upset, he was just having a moment at the expense of his former assistant when he was the Bosco head coach in the early 1990's. Diverio returned the smile, knowing that his team would be headed to the quarterfinals next week.
With
a 71-42 win, the top-seeded Ironmen will now face the up-and-coming Cardinals
of Westwood at Paramus High School next Sunday in what will likely be a 7:00
p.m. start.
Don Bosco's Tyrell biggs led all scorers with 22 points. |
"We present (Westwood) with some matchup problems," was Diverio's early analysis, "and they'll give us some matchup problems. That's a good basketball team that has been playing very well the last few weeks. They're here (quarters) because they deserve to be here."
As does Don Bosco, now 15-3 on the season. After spotting QP a 5-0 lead in the first 2:30 of the game, the Ironmen quickly righted the ship and turned a 7-3 deficit into a 20-7 lead with 17 straight points in 2:51.
Bosco went to a press after the Golden Griffins' quick start, and it changed the complexion and the tempo of the game. Carl Augustin had 7 of the 17 points in the streak after Chris Rose scored the first seven Bosco points in the game.
"We were
going to play the pressure defense at some point," Diverio remarked, "but
I didn't think we would have to go to it so quickly."
Mike McTigue (left) scored the game's first two points to help Q of P take and early lead. |
Bosco held a 24-11 lead after one period and increased it to 36-20 at the half before scoring the first 8 points of the third quarter. Ryan Kearney broke through for Q of P with a free throw 3:27 into the second half, but the game was basically decided at that point with DB owning a 44-21 lead.
Gregory, in his first year with Queen of Peace (10-6), saw two of his starters, Kearney and Michael Lamego, foul out in the third quarter. Kearney left with 11 points and 7 rebounds, having been the most effective Griffin on the floor.
Augustin
finished the game with 18 points despite not playing the entire fourth quarter,
including 10 of 13 from the foul line. The guard has become another strong
scoring threat for the Ironmen in recent games.
John Oates and the Bosco front line put the Golden Griffins in foul trouble. |
"Carl has really stepped up," Diverio noted. "We've been getting consistency out of (Tyrell) Biggs, (John) Oates and Rose, but Carl has added that next dimension, both offensively and defensively."
One of Bosco's goals was to contain QP's Nathan Gainer ("he's the guy who makes them go," Diverio said), and while he topped Queen of Peace with 12 points, he was never a true factor in the game.
The Griffins were 12 of 42 from the floor and 13 of 22 at the line, while Bosco hit 24 of 52 from the field and 19 of 25 free throws. The Ironmen also enjoyed a 37-22 rebounding edge, with Oates claiming 10 boards and Rose 7. Biggs topped all scorers with 22 points and had six rebounds, and Pete Conte had 8 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.
