Record 23 teams gain Jambo bids

The 48th Annual Oscar F. Thompson Memorial Basketball Jamboree will begin on Sunday with a record 23-team field after the selection and seeding was completed on Friday morning.

The tournament was given a big shot in the arm on Thursday night when Don Bosco, the acknowledged number one seed, lost a 57-53 game to Montclair. It was the first loss in New Jersey for the 14-2 Ironmen, and takes the aura of invincibility off of Bosco.

The tournament saw a record 18 teams earn automatic berths based on the minimum .650 winning percentage, and the selection committee (chairman Ed Strohmeyer, Mickey Corcoran, Bruce Bartlett, Paul Puglise and Jim Brangan) awarded five other teams entry into the tournament based on strength of schedule as well as their current record and quality wins: Ridgewood, Hackensack, River Dell, Englewood and Old Tappan.

Defending champion Bergen Catholic will not be part of the Jamboree this year after losing to Hackensack on Thursday and dropping to 7-9. It ends a streak of 33 straight appearances by the Crusaders, going back to 1971.

Paramus Catholic (10-3) earned the second seed based on their victory last week over St. Joseph (11-3), which was named the third seed. Demarest (13-1) picked up the fourth seed and Cliffside Park (10-1), which lost its first game of the season to Englewood on Thursday, is the fifth seed.

The six through 10 seeds are Teaneck (10-3), Ridgewood (9-5), Ramapo (9-2), Westwood (9-2) and Northern Highlands (10-3). All but Northern Highlands will receive byes into the second round.

Twenty-seven teams entered applications for the tournament, and in addition to Bergen Catholic, Mahwah (7-4), Midland Park (7-5) and Ridgefield (7-7) were not given a berth.

Sites and times for the first round are listed below. After the first round is completed, times and sites for the second round games at Northern Highlands and Tenafly will be determined.
