Sophomore Luis Gonzalez won his second straight BCCA Tournament title with an 11-3 win at 113. |
After taking the tournament by storm and winning a BCCA title last as a 103-pound freshman before finishing second at the state tournament, North Bergen’s Luis Gonzalez wanted to show all of North Jersey that his sensational rookie campaign was no fluke. He did that and then some, even when faced against a tough opponent in Marc Mastropietro from Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge.
The top-seeded Gonzalez scored a takedown midway through the first period and quickly turned that into three back points in cruising to the 113-pound title with a convincing 11-3 triumph for his second BCCA title in as many tries.
After taking a commanding 5-0 lead, Mastropietro escaped in the second period to cut the lead to 5-1. He could only hold off Gonzalez for so long as the talented Bruin hit a single-leg takedown early in the third to put the match away.
“I think I’m more polished than I was last year and I really work on my angles better this year,” said Gonzalez, who will be one of the favorites to win the 113-pound state title this season. “(Mastropietro) is a strong wrestler and he’s defensive-minded. I just had to keep working the angles and taking my time until I saw an opening.”
