JERSEY CITY -- The Snyder High School boys basketball team snapped Hudson Catholic's 80-game winning streak against public schools on Thursday with a thrilling 68-67 win in overtime on a buzzer beater by freshman Corey Manning-Floyd.
With the Tigers trailing by two and just 6.8 seconds on the clock, Isiah Small got the inbound pass from Rockquan Richburg, took two dribbles and threw a cross court pass to Manning-Floyd who hit an NBA-range three with a hand in his face as time expired.
“I felt that I was shooting the ball well tonight, I saw Zay (Small) dribbling up and he saw me," said Manning-Floyd. "I knew if I got the ball, I was shooting it and making it."
Manning-Floyd finished with a team-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals. Richburg, who is also a freshman, chipped in with 11 points, six assists and three steals.
.“They (Hudson) are a good basketball team, seasoned and they know how to win,” said Head Coach Shelton Gibbs in his 30th season coaching at Snyder, 13th as the head coach. “We needed to play our style of basketball, not try to do anything more, and that's what we did.”
Snyder came out with a quick lead and did not let up, dominating the first three quarters and taking a 41-25 lead into the final quarter. But the Hawks put together 34-point fourth quarter to tie up the game and force overtime.
Daeshawn Emanuel, had a career game for the Tigers posting a double-double with 20 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Small, who is a senior and the only returning varsity player from last year's team had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
“Isiah stepped up for us," said Snyder coach Shelton Gibbs, in his 13th year as head coach. "We asked him to lead, we asked him to control the game and tonight he did just that."
Jahvon Quinerly led Hudson Catholic with 28 points and Luther Muhammad finished with 23 points. |
