Snyder's senior point guard Kenyan Goodson had 23 points, seven assists and six steals to lead the Tigers past Dickinson, 65-57, in the quarterfinals of the HCIAL boys basketball tournament on Saturday. |
JERSEY CITY -- The highly anticipated third meeting between the Snyder and Dickinson boys basketball teams took place on Saturday in the HCIAL quarterfinals and did not disappoint.
After splitting the two regular season meetings the Tigers and Rams played with a trip to the tournament semifinals on the line. Snyder used a big first quarter run to build a 15-point lead before holding on for a 65-57 victory.
The game started with teams trading baskets but then the Tigers went on a run and by the end of the first quarter held a 22-7 lead. Snyder kept the 15-point lead at the half.
But Dickinson battled back in the second half and cut the Tigers' lead to just six points in the fourth quarter.
“We wanted to come out and play Snyder basketball," said Snyder head coach Shelton Gibbs. "The last time we played, we went away from what we do and that cost us."
The exceptional play of senior Kenyan Goodson (23 points, 7 assists, 6 steals), who went 12-12 from the free throw line, helped Snyder secure the win. Senior center Ronald Washington, who picked up his fifth double-double of the year with 18 points and 11 rebounds, was also key. Forward Rylen Moorman chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds and Tykel Tate was relentless on defense as he has been most of the season.
“The focus in practice, knowing the scouting report and sticking to the game plan won this game for us," Goodson said. "The team effort opened up the game for me, especially Ron (Washington), who dominated inside and let me move the ball around.”
The Rams were led by Troy Lopez (17 points), Tamire Jones (10 points), Kamal Williams (11 points) and Juan Munoz (10 points).
Snyder will play Hudson Catholic (ranked fifth in the state) in the HCIAL semifinals against at Saint Peter’s University Tuesday at 8pm.
